Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats (SWOT)

A SWOT analysis (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats) is a useful tool to analyse the strategic environment of a company from both an internal and external viewpoint.

Internal analysis
Strengths
The strengths of a business relate to the internal environment, that is strengths specific to the company.

Example: A strength of our company is that, due to its small size, the time taken to implement an idea is quick with no need to obtain approval and authorisation for a project idea and no need to deliberate about project timescales and cost.

Weaknesses
The weaknesses of a business relate to the internal environment, that is the weaknesses specific to the company.

Example: A weakness of our company is that, due to its small size and lack of critical mass, it does not have the manpower to expand the business and develop numerous websites in parallel.

External analysis

Opportunities
The opportunities for a business relate to external conditions out of the company's control.

Example: An opportunity for our company is the continuing trend to increase online Internet advertising spend at the expense of more traditional newspaper and television mediums. This is out of our control and therefore an external factor, however, as our business is driven by online advertising, growth in spend is an opportunity for us to grow.

Threats
The threats to a business relate to external conditions out of the company's control.

Example: A threat to our company is the possibility of a recession and uncertain times. This is an external factor as it out of our control, however, should the economy experience two consecutive quarters of decline (the definition of a recession) then it is likely that companies would be less willing to advertise which would impact our advertising revenues.

Search Engine Optimisation Tips

The key to a successful website is undoubtedly unique content that is of a quality informative nature. Search engine tricks and manipulation may work in the short term, but in the long run quality will prevail. The most important tip to take note of is:
  • Write unique, quality content

Internet users need to stumble upon your website. One way in which traffic is driven is by links from external websites. In reality the web traffic received from such links is relatively small compared to the inflow of visitors from the monolithic search engines.

Getting links is known as linkbuilding and actually has a relevant benefit to performing well in search engines. Quality links will increase your search engine result rankings in the the likes of Google and Yahoo!

A link from an external website is effectively a vote of confidence for your website. Even better is if the website that links to you is relevant to the content of your website. If you think about it it makes sense that a link from a related website is a stronger vote of confidence than a random link.

  • Link build - get quality websites of a relevant topic to link to your website

Websites that appear in Google are known as indexed websites. This is because Google has had a look at them and indexed the content in its database. When Google takes a look at a website in its index, it also takes a look at all the websites that the indexed website is linking to. That is why links are so important. Link building will let the likes of Google know that your website exists.

  • Add your website to relevant directories and mega-directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory or take a look at our directory
  • Submit your website to Google and Yahoo!
  • Use a sitemap on your website so that Google can index all your web pages

Link Directory

Sponsor This Company is effectively a link directory. For a minimum sponsorship fee a company or website can be listed in the directory.

Links and Search Engines
The benefit of getting listed in the fully search engine indexed directory is improved search engine rankings in the likes of Google and Yahoo. The number of websites linking to your website effectively acts as a vote of confidence for your website and content. The more relevant the links the better. This is a science in itself known as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

With an initial low sponsorship fee it is hoped that companies will be encouraged to sign up as at the very least listed websites will benefit from inbound links.

The Bigger Picture
What makes the directory unique from any other is its purpose. Firstly it is a vehicle for raising finance for the one man, start up company that is this company.

If the idea to Sponsor This Company catches the imagination, then the benefits of listing in the directory will be pure advertising exposure from the throughput of visitors to the website. All sponsors are rotated in turn on the homepage with details of the biggest contributors, most recent additions as well as a sponsorship target all detailed.

The Link Directory
The directory is structured in a similar way to the Google Directory with categories such as Travel, Finance and Shopping.

Premier League

Premier League Online is a football website with two main goals:

1. For each of the Premier League football clubs, the website offers a Google powered search engine tailored to each club. For example if you support Manchester United and use our Manchester United Search Engine then your search results will be weighted towards Manchester United.

2. Every time a supporter visits the website the number of online supporter points increases. The website is therefore an online league of the most supported clubs. Arsenal or Chelsea may be at the top of the Premier League table each year, but perhaps it will be Derby County who tops Premier League Online.
